Waste Audit in the University Campus

Ø  The IIS University has committed to improve campus wide operations to minimize its impact on the environment and to foster environmental awareness, knowledge and responsibility. Solid waste auditing is conducted in university by The Department Of Environmental Science, to evaluate the amount of solid waste generated in campus area so that disposal of waste can be done in environmentally safe and economically efficient manner. The present study is a green initiative to conduct waste auditing in the IIS campus and it aims at transforming the campus into a ‘Zero Waste Campus’.  The major objective of the study:

·       is to estimate the total waste generated in the campus area

·       is to investigate the type of waste generated

·       is to evaluate the amount of different types of waste

·       is to suggest ways for waste minimization depending on the waste generated

·       is to plan sustainable waste management method for a greener and cleaner campus

Methodology

                                                 PLANNING

(A prior planning is essential to ensure audits good result)

                                                DATA COLLECTION

(To collect the information regarding the proper waste management and waste disposal various data collection methods like questionnaire and survey was used and the three target groups were sweepers, lab assistants and students for the study)

                                                        COLLECTION

( Waste was collected for consecutive 10 days from the various sources  in the large dustbins)

                                                     SORTING OF WASTE

PAPER   PLASTIC        GLASS     GARDEN    FOOD WASTE

(After the waste is sorted, it is dumped into black polythenes)

                                                      WEIGHING OF WASTE

(The sorted waste bags were weighed with the help of weighing balance to evaluate the amount of waste.)

                                                   ANALYSIS

(The further analysis of waste was done to collect the proper information about the amount of waste produce by the IIS UNIVERSITY.)
