Introduction

With the advent of industrialization and urbanization, issues of environmental pollution have increased, leading to rapid decline in the quality of environment. Keeping this in mind, the Department of Environmental Science of the IIS University successfully organized ICSSR sponsored two-day National Conference on “ Environmental Pollution: Consequences and Control” (NCEP-2016) in collaboration with Indian Association for Air Pollution Control (Delhi Chapter) from 7th to 8th October’ 2016.

The conference aimed to bring researchers, academicians, scholars and industry professionals of matching interests on a common platform to share new ideas, experiences and knowledge in the field of environmental pollution monitoring and control. NCEP-2016 proved to be an interdisciplinary platform for researchers and educators to present and discuss the most recent innovations to provide some concrete solution for the problem of environmental degradation. Conference summary captures a two-day programme of five technical and two poster sessions covering various problems related to environmental problems. The event brought together some 167 delegates including senior scientists, industrialists, academicians, budding young scientists and research scholars.

The major thrust area of this conference were:

  • Water Pollution Monitoring and control technologies, water resource management, water quality and health, technologies for water pollution prevention
  • Air Pollution Urban and rural air quality monitoring and control, Global environmental issues, air quality and health, technologies for air pollution prevention
  • Noise and Radiation Pollution
  • Natural resource conservation and sustainable development land degradation and control, ecological restoration, role of remote sensing in resource conservation, sustainable agriculture
  • Environment and Society impact of environmental deterioration on society, traditional methods, of environmental conservation, community participation in environmental conservation, occupational health hazards.

Day 1

INAUGURAL SESSION

The conference commenced with the inaugural session on 7th October 2016. Prof. K.S. Sharma, Advisor, The IIS University, Welcomed the resource persons, delegates and student participants. He gave an overview of the IIS University. Prof. Pradeep Bhatnagar, Dean, Faculty of Science, The IIS University highlighted on the aims and objectives of the conference. The Keynote address was delivered by Dr. Suresh Tiwari, Deputy Director, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune. He spoke on assessment of carbonaceous aerosols over the Northern part of India and highlighted its impact on regional climate.  Dr. Charu Jhamaria, Convener NCEP-2016 proposed a formal vote of thanks to the gathering on behalf of the department and organizing committee.

TECHNICAL SESSION I

The inaugural session was followed by five technical sessions spread over two days chaired by luminaries from Academia and professionals.

The first technical session focused on “Air Pollution And Control Technologies”. Prof. B.R. Bamniya from Department of Environmental Science, Mohanlal Sukhadia University, Udaipur chaired this session. The first invited lecture of this session was delivered by Dr. Prashant Goswami, Director, CSIR-NISTADS, New Delhi. He emphasised on comprehensive approach for control of Environmental Pollution. The next invited lecture was made by Prof. Suresh Jain, Head, Dept. of Natural Resources, TERI University, New Delhi. In his lecture he focused air pollution and its control strategies.

This session was followed by lunch and simultaneous session on poster presentation of faculty and research scholars. In all, 150 posters were displayed on first day of NCEP-2016 which were evaluated by a panel of two judges- Dr. A.M. Gautam, retd. Director ,GSI Jaipur and Prof. Nidhi Rai, Department of Environmental Science, Mohan Lal Sukhadiya University, Udaipur              

TECHNICAL SESSION II

The second technical session dealt with “Natural Resources Conservation and Sustainable Development”. The session was chaired by Dr. Priyanka Mathur, Associate Prof., Dept. of Zoology, The IIS University. This session included invited lectures by Prof. I.S. Thakur from the School of Environmental Sciences, Jawahar Lal Nehru University, New Delhi. In his lecture, he suggested the strategies for environmental protection and management focusing on moving ahead with sustainable practices.

The next invited lecture was delivered by Dr. A. M. Gautam, Ex-Director- GSI, Jaipur. The key highlights of his discussion were on the conflict of construction of large dams on hilly areas in connection with Geo-Environmentally sustainability. He presented with a case study report based on Bhakhra Dam.

This technical session included five speakers covering research conclusion matching the theme. Ms. Bhumi Patel, from NV Patel College of Pure and Applied Sciences threw light on eco-friendly methods for Bioremediation of Chlorpyrifos from agriculture soil by two species of fungus Trichoderma. The next speaker of the session Ms. Priya Patel, The Maharaja Sayajirao University, Vadodara spoke on occurrence of Rhizospheric microflora of Trigonella foeman graecum.Mr. Dhaval Kumar from the same institute discussed application of two soil fungi as phosphate solubilizing agent and assessing their performance for better growth of maize. In the continuation, the forth speaker Mr. Ankit Kapadia, S. P. University, Anand presented research conclusion on variation in seed germination of Soyabean following treatment with fungal metabolites.

The second technical session moved forward with the next speaker Ms. Alka Kataria from the host University, she talked about effect of organic, inorganic fertilizers and pesticides on the growth and other parameters of Brassica juncea (L.) var. Pusa Gold (mustard). The session concluded with last presentation by Dr. Priyanka Ashiya from the host department. Her presentation was based on assessing the sustainable farming practices through evaluating earthworm’s response on selective agrochemicals. With this the technical session of first day ended.

DAY 2

TECHNICAL SESSION III

The second day of the conference began with the technical session III which dealt with Water Pollution And Control Strategies. This session included two invited lectures and three speakers, chaired jointly by Prof. T.I. Khan, Director, Centre for HEEPS, University of Rajasthan, Jaipur and Prof. S. Dutta from Dept. of Remote Sensing, MDS Univeristy, Ajmer. The first invited lectures of the session proceeded with Dr. Urmila Brighu, Dept. of Civil Engineering, MNIT, Jaipur. Her lecture was based on textile waste water, discussing the present challenges and low cost approaches for treatment.

The next lecture was made by Dr. T.K. Joshi, Director, Centre for Occupational and Environmental Health, New Delhi. He spoke on evolution of environmental health. The session moved ahead with the speaker Dr. Ritu Jain, Kanoria P.G. Mahila Mahavidyalya, Jaipur. She concluded on relevance of fluoride content of certain water bodies of Alwar vis-à-vis their algal composition. The next speaker of the session Dr. Rashmi Pareek, University of Rajasthan presented on impact of human activity on the Diatom population of Galta Kund, Jaipur. In the last, Mr. Ashish Tambi from the host University concluded his findings on sensitivity and specificity analysis of Hydrogen Sulphide ( H2S) field test kit for detection of faecal contamination in drinking water.

ORAL AWARD SESSION

A separate award session for selected oral presentations by the delegates was conducted on second day of the conference which was judged by panel of experts for final selection. The members in the judging panel were Prof. I.S. Thakur, from JNU Delhi and Dr. Madhulika Bhati, from CSIR, NISTADS New Delhi. The chairperson of this session was Prof. Fatima Sulatana, Dept. of Wildlife Sciences, University of Kota. In this session, total ten oral presentations were included out of which three were selected for the award. This session was followed by lunch and a parallel poster session for student category continued which was also judged by panel of experts. Total 80 posters in the student category were displayed before the valediction session. 

TECHNICAL SESSION IV

This was the last technical session of NCEP-2016 which was chaired by Prof. Nidhi Rai, Head, Department of Environmental Science, Mohanlal Sukhadia University, Udaipur. This session which dealt with environmental health and society, included two invited lectures and two speakers. Prof. A.B. Gupta, Dept. of Civil Engineering, MNIT delivered the first lecture of this session on interventions of Environment Science and technology for a healthier society.

 The next lecture was given by Dr. Ram Prakash, Scientist, CSIR, CEERI, Pilani. His lecture included indigenous environmental friendly mercury-free plasma UV lamp technology and solution for mercury disposal from UV-lamps. The last speaker in this session was Dr. Charu Jhamaria, Convener of NCEP and Head of the host department. She presented her study based on risk assessment of heavy metal toxicity through vegetables grown on wastewater irrigated soils.

The conference had a total of 16 oral presentations and 180 poster presentations. The conference ended successfully with valedictory session.Followed by this, distribution of awards for best oral presentations and best poster presentations were done.

Dr. Charu Jhamaria, Convener, NCEP-2016 summed up the highlights of the conference by presenting report on the deliberations made by the delegates over two day conference. Mr. Ashish Tambi, Organising secretary, NCEP-2016 concluded the conference with report reading and thanking all the resource person, invited speakers and delegates.
