Celebration of Wildlife Week (1st-7th October) 2018

The department of Environmental Science celebrated wildlife week from 1st October to 7th October 2018 in association with Eco-friendly association of University in an effort to create greater awareness among the students towards wildlife and its conservation. A number of activities were organized during the week such as Quiz Competition, Slogan Writing Competition, Guest Lecture, Film Screening, Poster Making Competition, visit to Biological Park, etc.

1st October 2018: Quiz Competition

A quiz was organized for students of faculty of Science on day 1 of wildlife week in the audio-visual (A.V) hall of the University. The quiz covered interesting questions based on wildlife and biodiversity conservation, National parks and sanctuaries, etc. It was conducted using Kahoot!-a game based learning platform. A total of 101 studens participated in the same. Ms. Vipasha Bhatnagar of M.Sc Semester III stood first in the quiz contest followed by Ms. Deeksha Sharma of M.Sc (Environmental Science), Semester III on second position and Ms. Parul Sharma of B.Sc (Environmental Science), Semester V securing third position. All the students were very enthusiastic and thoroughly enjoyed the contest.

3rd October 2018: Guest Lecture and Slogan Writing Competition

The 3rd day of Wildlife Week celebration was marked by two activities viz. guest lecture and slogan writing competition organised in the Audio-Visual hall of the University.  This day was graced by the auspicious presence of Prof. Reena Mathur (retired Professor of Zoology and Wildlife expert from Rajasthan University) who enlightened the students of the University with the diversified fauna of our country along with judging the slogan writing competition. Prof. Mathur delivered lecture on “Wild animals of India with special reference to lesser known animals”.  The lecture comprised of facts related to number of national parks, biodiversity hotspot, marine hope spot, Ramsar sites with perfect picturization of their location on Indian maps. What got stuck and gripped the students to the lecture were real photographs of the lesser known wildlife and Prof. Mathur’s deliverance. Prof. Reena also encouraged students to be more observing and keen for their surroundings. The day activity witnessed the participation of total of 268 students from the Science stream (graduates and post-graduates) both in the Guest lecture and slogan writing competition. All the students came up with  innovative slogans in relation to wildlife and were judged by Prof. Reena Mathur. Ms. Vineesha Garg (student of B.Sc. Pass course 3rd Semester) secured 1ST position followed by Ms. Bipasha Bhatnagar (student of M.Sc. Environmental Science 3rd semester) who secured 2nd position and Ms. Saudamini Sharma (student of B.Sc (Economic Hon.) stood third in slogan writing competition.

4th October 2018: Film Screening

On day 4, a film screening was organized for students of faculty of science in A.V. Hall of University. A total of 130 students along with Dean, Faculty of Sciences and faculty members of Environmental Sciences watched Delhi Safari- a movie directed by Nikkhil Advani. Delhi Safari is the story of a journey undertaken by a leopard cub, his mother, a monkey, a bear and a parrot when the forest they live in is on the verge of destruction. Builders have encroached upon their forest and the animals decide to go to Delhi and protest in front of the parliament and ask the parliament some very simple yet pertinent questions they were thinking of– why has man become the most dangerous animal? The film is all about the consequences arising from deforestation and destruction of natural habitats of wild animals. Due to urbanization, industrialization and growing population needs, forest area in the country has got depleted at an alarming rate and therefore disturbing habitat for wild animals which plays an important role in balancing the ecosystem. The film screening proved to be beneficial to the students and creates awareness regarding the ill effects of destruction of wildlife habitats.

5th October 2018: Poster Making Competition

On the mark of wildlife week (1st October to 6th October, 2018) celebrations, the Department of Environmental Science and Ecofriendly Association in collaboration with Visual Arts department of the University organized a poster making competition on 5th October, 2018 on the topic ‘Wildlife-Nature’s Greatest Treasure’ in Visual Arts Lab.  The competition comprised of two categories viz. first for Non Visual Arts students and second for Visual Arts students. In all, 71 students participated in the competition. The competition was judged by Prof. Pradeep Bhatnagar, Dean Faculty of Science and Dr. Subroto Mandal, Professor, Visual Arts department.

In first category i.e. Non Visual Arts students, the following students were the winners:

3)         Parul Sharma (B.Sc Sem V)

In second category i.e. Visual Arts students, the following students were the winners

1)         Titiksha Malhotra-BVA Sem VII

2)         Sakshi Agarwal-BVA Sem V

3)         Nisha Choithani- BVA Sem VII

6th October 2018: Visit to Nahargarh Biological Park

The department of Environmental Science organized a visit to Nahargarh Biological Park, Jaipur on 6th of October 2018. This Biological Park has spread over 7.2 sq km of Nahargarh Sanctuary Park under the Aravalli range. The main initiative of the park is to conserve the flora and fauna which is one of the most required nowadays. The visit was organized with an aim to acquaint students with the natural flora and conserved fauna of the area. A group of 35 students of Science faculty visited the park accompanied by two faculty members. During the visit students observed various species of plants and also collected some leaves for herbarium file. Students could also make a note of habitat of various animal species and their behavior.The visit proved to be very enriching for the students.
