  1. Provide hand on experience for monitoring physico-chemical characteristics of potable water
  2. Develop skills for planning monitoring programmes for pollution prevention and interpret the results

Upon completion of this practical course, students will:

CO45: Develop and apply new water quality monitoring concepts, after evaluating the existing monitoring concepts

CO46: Design effective water quality monitoring networks of surface waters

CO47: Select and apply appropriate methods to assess water quality in natural waters in relation to their anticipated use

CO48: Assemble the existing information of different tools, criteria and assessment methods and apply for the successful monitoring of surface and ground waters 

Approach in teaching:

Conduction of practical exercises, Interpretation of results obtained after analysis of samples

Learning activities for the students:

Preparation of flow charts for conduction of practical exercises, field visits, case studies

Preparation of practical records, Viva Voce, Class Test, Semester End Examination

Water Analysis

  • Objectives of Water Quality Monitoring
  • Type of Samples: Grab, Composite and Integrated
  • Estimation of pH in the water sample
  • Estimation of Acidity in the water sample
  • Estimation of Alkalinity in the water sample
  • Estimation of Chloride in the water sample
  • Estimation of Free CO2 in the water sample
  • Estimation of Residual chlorine in the water sample
  • Estimation of Total Hardness in the water sample.
  • Estimation of conductivity of the water sample.
  • Estimation of Total Dissolved Solids in the water sample
  • Estimation of Dissolved oxygen in the water sample
  • Estimation of Chemical oxygen demand in the water sample
  • Qualitative estimation of Nitrate
  • Qualitative estimation of Phosphate

 

Visit to State Pollution Control Board and Waste water treatment plant and report preparation for the same.

Note:  Any other practical exercise (related to theory) may be conducted besides the ones mentioned above.
