Course Objectives:
This course will enable the students to
- Give hands on experience to the students in exercises dealing with vegetation ecology.
- Understand the concepts related to vegetation dynamics.
- Acquaint students with local flora and fauna

Upon completion of this Practical course, the students will: CO9: Appraise vegetation surveys through acquired knowledge and develop a comprehensive understanding of vegetation ecology through practical experience. CO10: Analyse the flora and fauna in terrestrial communities CO11: Evaluate the effects of disturbances on plant communities through their acquired knowledge and skills in vegetation ecology CO12: Relate to the need to be well versed with issues related to environment and its protection |
Approach in teaching: Conduction of practical exercises, Interpretation of results obtained after conduction of practicals, field visits Learning activities for the students: Preparation of flow charts for conduction of practical exercises, Interpretation of results according to the given study sites, Browsing through informative portals such as ENVIS |

CONTENTS
- Study of vegetation of local area/college campus and Herbarium preparation
- Study of fauna of local area/college campus
- To find out minimum size and number of the quadrat for vegetation study
- Study of vegetation density, frequency and abundance by quadrat method
- Study of dominance of plant species by quadrat method
- Identification of mammalian species by hair imprinting method.
- To calculate the leaf area index
- To calculate percent leaf injury
- Estimation of chlorophyll content in leaves
- Preparation of Green File
Note: Any other practical exercise (related to theory) may be conducted besides the ones mentioned above.
