The department of Environmental Science of the University organized a “National seminar on Disaster Management-Issues and challenges” on 17th of January2012 at the IIIM campus Mansarovar keeping in view, the rapid industrialization, Urbanization and unplanned development which is leading to Environmental degradation and promoting natural and anthropogenic disasters. It was our privilege to have Shri. M. Shashidhar Reddy,Vice Chairman National Disaster Management Authority New Delhi as the chief guest and the keynote speaker of the seminar. Mr. Reddy enlightened the participants with his lecture entitled” Disaster Management in India present status and road ahead”. In his lecture Mr. Reddy discussed the present status of Disaster management strategies in our country by quoting several examples of disasters which occurred worldwide. He emphasized on the need of awareness amongst the common people for the mitigation and prevention of disasters. The speaker for the plenary session was Mr. M.K. Khanna retd. IAS. He delivered a lecture on the “Basics of Disaster Management” where he discussed the causes of natural and manmade disasters and also explained several basics concept related to Disaster and its mitigation and management. The seminar provided a platform for the students to understand and work upon this important issue.
