This course will enable the students to –

  1. Gain knowledge on concepts and applications of Remote Sensing
  2. Interpret images and extract information on the earth surface from multi-resolution imagery

Remote Sensing

Upon completion of this course, students will:

CO65:  Analyse the principles and components of aerial photogrammetry and remote sensing and adequately use vocabulary, terminology and nomenclature of the discipline.

CO66: Perceive the characteristics of electromagnetic spectrum and its interaction with atmosphere and earth surface features.

CO67:  Assess the remote sensing sensors and platforms on-bord various satellites and will interpret satellite imageries using visual interpretation elements.

CO68:  Compute knowledge of remote sensing in different environmental applications.

Interactive Lectures, Power point presentations, Informative Videos, Demonstration, tutorials

Learning activities for the students:

Image Interpretation, Case studies, Simulation

Quiz, Power Point Presentations, Individual and group projects, Assignments, Class Test, Semester end examination

Introduction to Remote Sensing and Aerial Photography
  • Concept and Scope of Remote Sensing: Definition, history, process and characteristics of remote sensing system, types of remote sensing, Advantages and Limitations, Remote Sensing scenario in Indian context
  • Introduction to Aerial Photography: Historical development and Fundamentals of Aerial photography, Types of aerial photography, types of camera films
  • Comparison between Aerial photography and Remote sensing

Concept of Electromagnetic Radiations
  • Introduction to EMR: EMR properties, EMR wavelength regions and their applications
  • EMR-Atmospheric Interactions: Scattering, absorption, transmission, atmospheric windows
  • EMR-Earth Interactions: Concept of spectral signature and Spectral Reflectance Curves

Remote Sensing Platforms and Sensors
  • Platforms: Ground, Airborne and Space borne platforms
  • Sensors: Types and characteristics of Sensors (Active and Passive sensors, Whiskbroom and Push-broom sensors, Imaging and Non-imaging sensors), types of sensor resolutions,
  • Satellite orbits: Geostationary, Sun-synchronous, polar orbit
  • Specification of some popular satellites: Landsat, SPOT, IRS
