This course will enable the students to –

  1. Understand the major problems of Environmental Pollution due to natural and anthropogenic causes
  2. Identify various control methods for prevention and control and pollution

Environmental Pollution and Control

Upon completion of this course, students will:

CO37:  Examine the critical linkage between environmental pollution and human health

CO38:   Appraise the damage caused by the pollution of the air, water, land and noise on environment

CO39:  Create the ability to identify the best and suitable methods to control the environmental pollution

CO40:  Assemble the risks of various environmental problems and extent of human intervention to reduce them

Air pollution and its control
  • Nature of pollutants: Biological, Chemical and Physical
  • Types of air pollutants; their characteristics and sources
  • Effects of major air pollutants (SOx, NOx, CO2, O3 PAN, PM10 & PM 2.5)
  • Basic methods of air pollution control (Reduction at source, change of process)
  • Equipments used to control air pollution-cyclones, ESP, fabric filters & wet scrubbers.

  • Sources and types of water pollutants (Inorganic, organic, O2 demanding, thermal, plant nutrients, sediments, radioactive and infectious agents)
  • Effects of water pollutants
  • Potable water treatment: Coagulation & Flocculation, Filtration and Disinfection

  • Major sources of soil pollution
  • Types of soil pollutants (domestic and municipal waste, industrial and mining waste, agricultural waste, radioactive and chemical waste)
