Objective: 

Course objectives

This course will enable the students to -

  1. Learn the practical aspect of the vegetation dynamics and soil and air analysis
  2. Learn about the various aspects of soil quality analysis for remediation of polluted soils

Upon completion of the practical course, student will be able to:

CO41: Recognize and apply soil fertility concepts and land use to ensure that land is managed in a sustainable

CO42:  Conduct in field soil tests and use this data to assess the suitability of soils to grow a variety of crops by forming a crop nutrient plan

CO43:  Develop basic understanding of the influence of underlying geology on soil function

CO44:  Use contemporary tools and techniques for studying wildlife and its habitat

SOIL ANALYSIS

AIR QUALITY ANALYSIS

  • Estimation of respirable dust in the ambient air using Respirable Dust Sampler
  • Estimation of PM10  in the ambient air using Respirable Dust Sampler
  • Estimation of indoor Respirable and suspended particulate matter using Handy Sampler

VEGETATION DYNAMICS

  • Determination of Leaf Area Index (LAI)
  • Determination of Percent leaf injury
  • Determination of Chlorophyll Content of leaves from polluted and non-polluted area.
  • Estimation of Dust Retention Capacity of the leaf samples
  • Least Size of Quadrate for community study
  • Determination of Frequency, Density and Abundance of various plant species in a community

  • Identification of Mammalian species by Hair Imprinting Method
  • Wildlife Census Methods: Line Transect and Mark Recapture

PREPARATION OF A RECORD COMPRISING OF THE FOLLOWING TOPICS ON MAPS

  • Mineral resources in India
  • Major Soil types of India
  • Ecozones of India
  • Deserts of the World
  • Forests of India
  • Major Biomes of the World
  • Hotspots of Biodiversity in the World
  • Projects Tiger, lion,Elephant, Gibbon, Rhino and lion tailed Macaque in India

VISIT

In this semester it is compulsory for each student to visit a National Park/ any natural habitat/ Sanctuary/Research organization/Industry and prepare a report of the same, marks for which will be added in practical exam.

Note:  Any other practical exercise (related to theory) may be conducted besides the ones mentioned above.
