Pollution monitoring and control

Upon completion of this course, students will

CO101: Acquire knowledge of atmospheric processes for pollution prevention and control

CO102: Plan the implementation of pollution control techniques for specific industrial processess

CO103: Design monitoring  programmes for various pollutants which would help in planning a monitoring and analysis of pollutants

CO104: Develop sustainable method pollution control at using basic principles of chemistry and microbiology

 CO105: Design pollution prevention and  remediation techniques as per the requirements of the  establishment/Industry

 CO106: Contribute effectively in course-specific interaction

Approach in teaching:

Guided and shared readings, Discussions, Demonstration, Use of informative videos, and discussion of case studies

Learning activities for the students: Analysis and suggestions of case studies, PowerPoint presentations for the result analysis of research papers

  • Photochemical reactions in the atmosphere (Reactions of NOx, O3, Hydrocarbons)

Air Pollution Control
  • Control of air pollution by equipment: Settling chambers, Cyclones, Filters, Electrostatic precipitators and Scrubbers
  • Control of gaseous Contaminants: Absorption, Adsorption, Combustion, Masking and Counteracting, Control at the Source
  • Preventive Techniques: Shift of the sources, Substitution of raw material and fuels, Process modification

  • Sources of water pollution
  • Characteristics of industrial wastewater and sewage
  • Treatment of sewage: Primary, secondary and tertiary
  • Attached and Suspended growth system: trickling filters, Activated Sludge process (ASP), Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) and RBC, Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR)
  • Concept of CETP
