Practical: Microbiological Analysis & Disaster Management [1]

Paper Code:
25ENV 325
Credits:
6
Contact Hours:
12.00
Max. Marks:
100.00
Objective:

This course will enable the students to -

  1. Integrate theoretical and practical knowledge of isolation of microbes from different habitats
  2. Make the students aware of natural disasters and their management

Course Outcomes:

Upon     completion     of     the

practical     course,     student

will:

CO92: Develop understanding regarding working principles and procedures for instruments used in microbiology and biotechnology exercises

CO93: Demonstrate techniques involved           in the isolation of microorganisms from different habitats

CO94: Appraise the natural and anthropogenic disasters and analyze their management process through report preparation and presentation.

CO95: Examine the disasters of the past and critically analyze them through case studies and map plotting

CO96: Accurately document experimental procedures and results in the practical file, ensuring comprehensive and precise records of laboratory activities.

CO97: Explain experimental concepts during viva-voce assessments, demonstrating the practical application of theoretical knowledge.

CO98: Contribute effectively to course-specific interaction

MICROBIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS

  • Acquaintance with the following for spot identification:
    • Autoclave, Incubator, Hot plate, Water bath, Stirrer, Inoculating loop, Oven, Centrifuge, Bunsen burner, Laminar flow hood, Microscope

   EXERCISE ON DISASTER MANAGEMENT

  • The students will prepare a report and a PowerPoint presentation on specific disaster management topics of interest (eg. Earthquake, Floods, Drought, Landslide, epidemics, pandemics, anthropogenic disasters, etc.) followed by peer feedback and discussions on presentation content and delivery.
  • Research and compilation of a list of essential items needed in an emergency preparedness kit followed by discussions and review of the contents of the preparedness kit
  • Case study on any recent disaster including  analysis of  the disaster response and recovery efforts, including the successes and failures
  • Earthquake drill: Simulate an earthquake scenario and practice the appropriate safety procedures
