Objective: 

This course will enable the students to -

  1. Impart knowledge and develop interdisciplinary skills for conducting Environmental impact assessments for new development projects and understand the role of EIA in sustainable development
  2. Promote environmentally sound and sustainable development through the identification of appropriate enhancement and mitigation measures for development projects
  3. Understand applications of remote sensing and GIS in Environmental Conservation

 

Course Outcomes: 

Upon    completion     of    this

course, the student will:

CO40: Evaluate           the   development projects and suggest mitigative methods for sustainable development

CO41: Design new methods for evaluating Environmental problems for proposed development projects

CO42: Develop skill to conduct Environmental  impact assessment independently            by examining     the environmental consequences of projects before their establishment

CO43: Establish Environmental Consultancy for conducting EIA and preparing EIS

CO44: Compute knowledge of remote sensing, GIS and GPS for environmental conservation      

CO45: Contribute effectively to course-specific interaction

Process and Methods Used in EIA

 

  • Procedure of EIA: screening, scoping, description of the project, collection of baseline, information, impact identification, prediction and evaluation, and post-project monitoring.
  • Methods used in EIA:- Checklists, Matrices, Networks, Adhoc, Overlays, BEES (Battelle Environmental Evaluation System)
  • Environment Management Plan.

Remote sensing and its applications

 

  • Concept of Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR): EMR properties, EMR wavelength regions and their applications
  • EMR-Atmospheric Interactions: Scattering, absorption, transmission, atmospheric windows
  • EMR-Earth Interactions: Concept of Spectral Signature and Spectral Reflectance Curves
  • Types of Remote Sensing: Passive, Active, Thermal and Microwave
  • Sensors and Orbits: Types and characteristics of Sensors, types of sensor resolutions, types of satellite orbits
  • Application of remote sensing in EIA:
    • Urban/rural area planning and land use
    • Soil, water and air quality monitoring
    • Geology and geomorphology
    • Forestry and ecology
