Objective: 

Course objectives:

This course will enable the students to –

  1. Acquaint with working principle and process of instruments used in Environmental Microbiology .
  2. Integrate theoretical and practical knowledge of isolation of microbes from different habitats.

Practical: Microbiological Analysis

CO50: Develop the practical skills and apply appropriate methods for isolation of microorganisms from polluted and non-polluted samples including water, milk and soil samples

CO51: Acquainted with essential laboratory equipment for environmental microbiology ensuring proficiency in equipment operation and safety protocols.    

CO52: Systematically document experimental procedures, observations, and results from environmental microbiology practical exercises, demonstrating meticulous record-keeping skills

CO53: Explain experimental concepts during viva-voce assessments, demonstrating practical application of theoretical knowledge.

CO54: Contribute effectively in course-specific interaction

Approach   in teaching: Conduction   of practical exercises, Preparation of sample                dilutions, demonstration

Learning activities for the students: Simulation, Presentation, and Self-learning videos

Preparation of practical records, Viva Voce, Class Test, Semester End Examination

 

  • Preparation of Nutrient Agar and Nutrient Broth
  • Isolation of pure culture using Streak Plate Technique
  • Isolation of microorganisms from soil sample.
  • Isolation of microorganisms from water sample
  • Examination of sanitary quality of milk by coliform analysis and methylene blue reductase test
  • To study the gram staining of bacteria culture
  • MPN (Most Probable Number)-for polluted and non-polluted water samples
  • Acquaintance with the following for spot identification
    • Autoclave
    • Laminar flow hood
    • Incubator
    • Hot plate
    • pH meter
    • Centrifuge
    • Magnetic Stirrer
    • Inoculating loop
    • Oven
    • Qubec Colony counter

Note: Any other practical exercise (related to theory) may be conducted besides the ones mentioned above
